The Horst Wessel Song
The Peat-Bog Soldier Song (NOTE: the Peat-Bog Soldier Song will not be included in this production)
The scenes of Private Life are divided by lyrics that Brecht wrote, intended to be sung to the tune of the "Horst Wessel Song" ("Horst Wessel Lied" - "lied" being the German word for song) . The lyrics to the song were originally a poem by storm trooper Horst Weseel. After his death in 1930, the lyrics were put to music, and "Horst Wessel Lied" became an unofficial national anthem of Nazi Germany. Please note that this is a Nazi marching song, and it is not something to be played lightly. The provision of this song is for educational use only, and we in no way endorse its message.
English TranslationFlags high, ranks closed,
The S.A. marches with silent solid steps. Comrades shot by the red front and reaction march in spirit with us in our ranks. The street free for the brown battalions, The street free for the Storm Troopers. Millions, full of hope, look up at the swastika; The day breaks for freedom and for bread. For the last time the call will now be blown; For the struggle now we all stand ready. Soon will fly Hitler-flags over every street; Slavery will last only a short time longer. Flags high, ranks closed, The S.A. marches with silent solid steps. Comrades shot by the red front and reaction march in spirit with us in our ranks. |
The Peat Bog Soldier Song (Die Moorsoldaten) was a popular protest anthem in Europe suring the middle of the twentieth century. It became the anthem for Republicans in the Spanish Civil War, but it originated from the Emsland concentration camps in the early 1930s. Esterwegen was among these camps, and that is the setting for scene 4, in which this song is sung.
English Translation(From Private Life, as translated by John Willet)
See, whichever way one gazes Naught but boggy heath lies there Not one bird his sweet voice raises In those oak trees gaunt and bare We are the peat-bod soldiers With shovels on our shoulders We march Back and forth the guards keep pacing Not a soul can get away Shots for those who try escaping Thick barbed wire for those who stay We are the peat-bod soldiers With shovels on our shoulders We march We;ve no use for caterwauling Sunshine follows after rain One day soon you'll hear us calling Homeland, you are ours again We are the peat-bod soldiers With shovels on our shoulders We march *Obviously, the text that Brecht chose to use was a shortened version, one which is typically the version recorded. * |
